145. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his rule was firmly established (1 Kings 2:12).

David has now passed from the scene, “resting with his fathers” according to the familiar Old Testament euphamism. And Solomon has been established because 1) David made clear the succession path; 2) David gave Solomon transitional advice in dealing with the unfinished business of his own kingdom; and 3) David handed him a kingdom at peace. These are the key elements of transitional effectiveness–make the choice of a successor clear, take care of unfinished business, and don’t hand off unresolved issues and messes.
