Notes from the Journey with David – 133

133. You yourself swore to me…Solomon shall be king after me (2 Kings 1:17).

Most kings have obvious succession plans. The next in line knows who he is and everyone else knows it to. But given the turmoil of David’s family and the early death of a few of his sons, there’s room for some to manipulate for their own gain. Adonijah does just that. But Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba know the king’s true wishes. Give them credit for taking the issue to the right authority rather than acting on their own. They could have fought Adonijah, but civil war would have likely ensued. Instead, they took the matter to David, whose decision settled the matter clearly. The point? Allow authority to rule over uncertainty.
