Notes from the Journey with David – 99

99. The king told the troops, “I myself will surely march out with you” (2 Samuel 18:2).
David has learned his lesson. When he previously stayed home from the battle, the incident with Bathsheba took place. So David is determined to be where he is supposed to be. But on this occasion, such a move lacks wisdom. Ultimately his men counsel him to remain behind since he is the primary target of Absalom’s army. Eliminating David is the goal of his enemy. So David reluctantly, but wisely, stays behind. The moment demonstrates David’s determination to avoid previous pitfalls, but also his willingness to listen to the wise counsel of those he leads.
