Notes from the Journey with David – 92

92. You came only yesterday. And today shall I make you wander about with us (2 Samuel 15:20).
David’s words to Ittai the Gittite underscore the truth that loyalty is an expectation built over time. Though Ittai will reject David’s invitation to remain and support Absalom–the Gittite is already determined to follow David wherever he goes–still, David’s expectations of this man take into consideration his limited time of service. When leaders demand loyalty from new employees, they often create a militant environment of obedience, but no real loyalty. Understand that the loyalty a leader seeks must develop over time. Surely a leader has a right to the loyalty of one he has fed for years, but those who are new to the team will need time to feel so attached. The leader that gives room for that growth will arrive at that loyalty much sooner than those who militantly demand it.
