The Brotherhood – Part 37

The Brotherhood of the Second Cross was established on Father’s Day 2005 where 160 men stood before their wives and children to pledge themselves to purity, self-sacrifice, loyalty, and excellence. Today, hundreds more have joined the commitment.

When I think about the Brotherhood and the relationships I enjoyed with those first guys who took the pledge, I can’t help but think of David’s mighty men. Thirty guys who surrounded David in battle after battle, who exerted their significant strength for his kingdom, who risked everything for the values he taught. Wow! I love those guys. Makes me want to watchBraveheart again!

As a pastor, the men who came alongside are my greatest treasure. Like David, I want to name names and tell of their exploits, but I’d be afraid to leave someone out, and thus make their contribution seem less valuable.

But I want them to know, and I want you to understand just how valuable such men are. As we say repeatedly here, men are at their best when they are laying themselves down for others. When you do that for God and your church, well, there’s a heroic quality that deserves enormous gratitude.

So guys, if you’re the man who stands beside your pastor and looks for ways to help any way you can–thanks! If you’re the guy who sits in the church nursery rocking an infant or grabs a shovel to dig up a clogged sewer line or mans the buttons on the church sound system or shows up to carry groceries to a widow in need or gives your Saturday mornings to coaching soccer at the local YMCA or one of the thousands of other ways you’re there to help…THANKS!

Never underestimate the power of your presence in any situation. When you are there and when you offer a helping hand, you demonstrate that you value such moments in a way worthy of your time. You are what makes God’s army strong and full of faith.

So today I join thousands of other pastors who would shout their approval and appreciation. Your loyalty to God and your church are making a greater difference than you know. You’re making an impact on the hearts of many, including the heart of your pastor.

THANKS!
